December is one of the busiest times of year for news, but it’s also a great chance to continue building the story about your company for public engagement. Below I’ve included a few tips for maximizing the dizzying schedule of the holiday season to keep your company/project at the center of conversation.
- Get Festive
From December until January, nearly everyone will be focused on major holiday celebrations such as Hanukkah and Christmas. Your content should either highlight these themes or find creative ways to connect your stories to them. The exciting thing is, there is an audience for such content and millions of people on and offline who are willing to engage with material related to the holiday season. Using social media is a great way to reach groups who may be unfamiliar with the company/organization, but recognize your content because it is related to their own interests. That’s an opportunity.
- Stay on Topic
If there is something major happening at the company, make sure it waits until after the holidays. Big announcements may be drowned out or go unnoticed due to a heightened interest in various celebrations. Furthermore, being disruptive in terms of messaging can be effective at certain times, but when it comes to the holidays, it may be actually be perceived as dismissive. Timing is everything, so plan accordingly.
- Highlight Charity
The end of the year holiday season is all about giving and helping those in need. Is the company involved in charitable efforts? If not, now is a great time to get started. Suggest that the company partner with a local charitable organization, or get involved with major efforts like, Toys for Tots or Angel Tree. Another option, that many other companies have already done, is donating products or services rather than money. If, for example, you own a restaurant, donating food to a shelter or food bank could have a really large impact.
- Plan Ahead
The good thing about this time of year is that it’s always the same. That is, we know what to expect and when it will take place. Start thinking ahead about how you will capitalize on the holiday excitement for next year. It would be a great time to coordinate the release of a new product or announcements with a holiday theme.
